WINTER
Winter is always a special season in the Alps and Mallnitz is no exception. The whole area turns into a magical winter wonderland and arguably some of the best winter sports are to be found.
Guaranteed snow can be found at the Mölltal Glacier with skiing all year round and during the winter season skiing can be found also in the Ankogel arena. There are slopes for all skills, gentile slopes for starting out, breath taking runs down from the top of the ANKOGEL and multiple ski touring routes await you. Lift passes can be purchased at the ski lift office or online at www.gopass.sk. The Ankogel Arena is a short ski bus ride away and there a multiple pick up / drop off points throughout the village, this is free with a valid ski pass. If you want to improve your skills or are experiencing your first time on the slopes there are ski schools in the village where instructors will guide you on your way. Private, family or group lessons are available through www.schischule-ankogel.at or www.wolligger-sports.com Both have shops in the village and at the Ankogel ski station as well as online booking options for Lessons and Ski / Board Hire.

Mallnitz is the proud holder of the Carinthian seal of approval for its cross-country skiing routes. With 25km of routes available to skate at 1200 meters through the clear air of these high Alpine Valleys in the National Park and Seebachtal and Tauern Valley. Winter in Mallnitz is more than skiing. Snow shoe tours of the Tauren valley are available every Tuesday during the winter season with a guide from the Visitor Centre. Booking is possible until 16:00 latest the day before. Tel: +43 (0) 4825 / 6161. Alternatively book yourself a wholesome feast of Spare ribs with sauerkraut, fresh rye bread, mustard and horseradish to warm your insides from the traditional Stockerhutte. It is the perfect end to an evening of tobogganing down one of Carinthia’s longest illuminated toboggan runs and comes recommended as one of the must do activities in Mallnitz.
Christmas is just like a fairy tale and at night when you are back at Houghton Haus relaxing next to the log fire and watching the snow fall planning your next day couldn’t be easier. If you want a break from the ski slopes during the festive season why not take a trip to one of the traditional Christmas markets. With excellent transport links it is easy to explore these in Carinthia, Salzburgerland and Tirol and we can happily advise on opening times. The village is also buzzing at new year with celebrations in the square to see the new year in with live music, mulled wine and locally sourced food in plentiful supply.
