Mallnitz is situated 1200m above sea level and is the meeting point of 3 valleys. This mountaineering village is a base to explore the Alps Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter.

Activities can range from a trip for coffee and cake, an explore around the national park visitor centre, walks and bike rides along flat level paths. For the more adventurous there are Alpine tours and hikes directly from the door up the 3000m peaks surrounding village taking in via ferrata along the way. Between Mallnitz and Obervellach is the longest managed canyon walk in the area of Carinthia. The top 4 mountain bike trails according to the national park guide are within the Mallnitz – Obervellach area and with bike hire available in the village there’s no stopping you. Wintertime sees Mallnitz become a snowy wonderland with skiing on offer on the Ankogel range and Mollertal glacier. 25 km of cross-country ski trails straight from the village, 3 km long illuminated toboggan run up the Tauerntal, Curling and ice skating at the tauernbad plus 10 km of cleared winter hiking trails, Snowshoeing trails and Ski touring routes.

In the summertime take a walk along one (or all) of the canyons within the area. Straight from Mallnitz you can access the Rabbish shluct following the course of the Rabbish river down the mountainside towards our neighbouring village of Obervellach. A short drive away you can join the Groppenstein, Ragga or Barbarossa shluct all with their impressive walkways, waterfalls and water carved rock canyons.

    • A visit to the national park visitors centre CLICK HERE TO VISIT THEIR WEBSTIE. With interactive displays about the area and local nature it’s a great stop for the 1st few days to find other places to explore. Hot coffee, sweet cakes, a large café area with play space, accessible toilet and baby changing facilities.
    • A walk up the Sebactal to the Stappittzer See. The path is flat and takes in some stunning mountain scenery and wildlife. The Stappitzer see is a bird reserve and home to a number of species including the Alpine swift and the crag martin. If you want a longer walk continue along the track where you can enjoy local food and drink at the Schwussner Hutte (May – September).
    • The Tauernbad Mallnitz is the villages swimming pool and spa. With a 25m pool, heated whirlpool, sauna and wellness area this is the ideal place to relax. There is a pool side hoist available to use for those who need it. After a swim why not have a drink or bite to eat in the Badwirtin restaurant attached to the pool.
  • In addition to the above, guided activities and equipment hire can be organised. These activities are run by local guides / companies and not directly by us at Houghton Haus. We are happy to arrange the following for you
